Increase in statutory minimum wages as of July 1, 2021

As of July 1, 2021, the statutory minimum wages will increase slightly by 0.96%. This means that in the second half of 2021, employers must pay employees age 21 or older with a fulltime contract at least € 1701 gross per month.

The Ministry of Social Affairs and Employment has published the increased minimum wages in effect as of July 1, 2021 in the ‘Staatscourant’, the Government Gazette of the Netherlands. The gross statutory minimum wages for the second half of 2021 are set at € 1701 per month, € 392.55 per week and € 78.51 per day. Employees who are paid minimum wages will therefore see a 0.96% increase compared to the statutory minimum wages in effect since January 1, 2021.
Employers are required by law to pay at least the minimum wages to employees age 21 or older with a fulltime contract. There are no set minimum wages per hour. In order to determine the minimum wages per hour, the statutory minimum wages per day must be divided by the number of working hours which make up a fulltime workweek within the respective organization (usually 36 or 40 hours).

Lower minimum wages for employees doing vocational education

Employees younger than 21 years of age must be paid at least a set percentage of the statutory minimum wages. Lower percentages apply to employees age 18, 19 or 20 who have an employment contract in relation to vocational education (called ‘beroepsbegeleidende leerweg (BBL)’ in Dutch).

The table below shows the percentages and amounts in minimum wages for the second half of 2021:
