Calling the BelastingTelefoon (the information line of the Dutch revenue service) is for free, unless you use a very expensive call transfer service. Do not fall for this scam!
If you search for a phone number online, there is a good chance the first search results that pop up do not show you a phone number belonging to the organization itself but to a call transfer service instead. You should therefore never click on the first search result without checking, even if you searched for the phone number of the BelastingTelefoon. You can check whether you are dealing with a call transfer service (to the revenue service) by looking the following:
- a call transfer service number starts with 0906 or 18;
- a call transfer service number is listed online under the name of a tax (e.g. payroll tax) or levy about which you want to contact the revenue service for information;
- a call transfer service number is named similar to BelastingTelefoon, but not the same!
- a call transfer service number is never mentioned on the website of Belastingdienst (the Dutch revenue service), belastingdienst.nl.
Some scammers call you and present themselves as employees working for Belastingdienst. It is therefore important to always check whether it is Belastingdienst which called you, for example by asking for the identification number on an assessment which you still have to pay. Moreover, if Belastingdienst calls you, it is almost always after you have contacted them first.
The main phone number of the Belastingdienst is 0800-0543. You are never charged for calling a number staring with 0800.
